Improvers: 'Introduction to Sewing With Knits' - Six Week Sewing Course Saturdays 4-6pm Starting 7th September

A course of six two-hour sewing lessons at Catkin & Scraps, Ulverston. The course starts on the 7th of September 2024 and will then be running every Saturday afternoon 4-6pm for six weeks.

The course is intended as an introduction to sewing with knit fabrics and is best suited to people who do have a little bit of experience with using a sewing machine and ideally have already made a garment or two.

We will make a simple, loose-fitting sweater top using a stable knit fabric such as French Terry, fleece-backed sweatshirting, ponti knit, waffle knit, interlock or jacquard jersey. You will have the option of learning to use one of our overlockers to sew your garment, but I will also show you how to sew with knits on a regular sewing machine.

We'll be using your choice of either the Sew House Seven Toaster Sweater (a women's pattern that goes up to a UK size 38) or Wardrobe By Me Rebel Raglan Sweatshirt (a men's pattern that goes up to a 4XL.)

Your pattern will be included in the price of the course, but you’ll need to buy the thread and fabric, pre-wash and iron it before the first lesson. If you're making the Rebel Raglan you'll also need some ribbing/cuffing.

You can pick the pattern up at the shop (open Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat 10-4pm,) and there is also a selection of appropriate fabrics available for you to buy, though you can also buy your fabric elsewhere if preferred.

During your weekly lesson in our Making Space you will have full use of our Janome computerised sewing machines and overlockers. Tea and coffee is available and there is a changing room to try on your makes.

Basic sewing supplies are available to use, but we do advise to bring your own kit if you have one, and you will need to bring your own pins to use.

The workshop is fairly accessible, but if you have any special requirements as far as access or seating goes please do get in touch and we'll see what we can do.

We only run these workshops if enough places are filled. If you change your mind or circumstances mean that you can no longer take part, please let us know as soon as possible. You can cancel your booking up to two weeks before the class is due to start, after that we will only refund you if we are able to fill your place.
