These hand dyed, pitloom woven Indian Kotpad cottons are really something special and we're very pleased to have started stocking them!

The fabric is dyed and woven by families of the Mirgan tribe in Kotpad, Koraput. The dye comes from the root of the local Aal (Morinda Citrifolia) tree. The yarn, treated with castor oil, is dyed with a powder made from the root and iron sulphate, then dyed and washed with Shikakai and Reetha (herbs and soapnuts) at the village pond. All in all the dyeing takes around a month of labour by the village women, after which the men receive the yarn to weave the cloth on a simple pitloom.

We buy the fabric direct from a partnership in India that ensures the artisans that make it receive fair compensation for their work.

These beautiful, vibrant fabrics are rustic and full of character, with quite a few small flaws and imperfections, so please be aware of that before you purchase - they are not like the factory made fabrics you may be used to!

Please also note the width and special washing instructions. If you treat these fabrics with the care and respect they deserve they will be a lovely addition to your handmade wardrobe, softening beautifully over time.

The Kotpad cottons are fairly light in weight and will have an element of sheerness as the weave is on the open side - the handle is akin to a light double gauze. They are yarn-dyed, so the front and back are the same.
