Beginner Sewing Session: Saturdays 10am-12pm

A two-hour tutored sewing session with Rita at Catkin & Scraps, Ulverston.

These sessions can be booked as a stand-alone session, choose your preferred date below.

Please note: This is a 'budget' session, which means that it will be taught while the shop is open and some interruptions will occur while I serve the occasional customer. On the plus side, this means that the session is priced lower than it would usually be and I have limited it to three places so that you will still receive a good amount of tuition.

The session is suitable for complete beginners who would like to learn how to use a sewing machine or overlocker, and/or who want to learn how to use a sewing pattern to make garments.  

Each week you will have a two-hour lesson in our Making Space, with full use of our Janome computerised sewing machines and overlockers. Tea and coffee is available and there is a changing room to try on your makes.

Depending on what you would like to learn, Rita can show you the basics to help you get started on your garment making journey, including how to use a sewing machine and some basic sewing techniques, how to read a sewing pattern, choosing your size and fabric and various garment making techniques, including how to adapt your pattern for longer or shorter legs, using a seam allowance, sewing a buttonhole, using fusible interfacing and sewing hems.

If you would like help learning to make garments, I have plenty of suitable sewing patterns (including size- and gender-inclusive ones) at the shop and can advise on what to start with. 

Basic sewing supplies are available to use, but we do advise to bring your own kit if you have one so you don't have to wait to use the communal ones. 

The Making Space is fairly accessible, but if you have any special requirements as far as access or seating goes please do get in touch and we'll see what we can do.

 If you change your mind or circumstances mean that you can no longer take part, please let us know as soon as possible. You can cancel your booking up to one week before the class is due to start, after that we will only refund you if we are able to fill your place.
