Complete Beginners BUDGET Sewing Course: Fridays 2pm-4pm Starting 5th September

A six-week course of sewing lessons at Catkin & Scraps, Ulverston, beginning on the 5th of September and ending on the 11th of October.
Please note: This is a 'budget' course, which means that it will be taught while the shop is open and some interruptions will occur while your teacher serves the occasional customer. On the plus side, the course is priced accordingly (it's usually £135) and I have limited it to three places so that you will still receive a good amount of tuition.
The course is aimed at complete beginners who would like to learn how to make garments and have not necessarily used a sewing machine before or who want to start right at the beginning.
Each week you will have a two-hour lesson in our Making Space, with full use of our Janome computerised sewing machines and overlockers. Tea and coffee is available and there is a changing room to try on your makes.
Rita will be teaching you the basics to help you get started on your garment making journey, including how to use a sewing machine and some basic sewing techniques, how to read a sewing pattern, choosing your size and fabric and various garment making techniques, including how to adapt your pattern for longer or shorter legs, using a seam allowance, sewing a buttonhole, using fusible interfacing and sewing hems.
During this course we'll be making a pair of pyjama pants, for which the pattern will be provided and is included in the cost of the class. You will need to buy your own fabric & thread however. Students receive a 10% discount on fabrics in the shop while they are booked onto a course, but you do not have to buy with us if you prefer to shop elsewhere or already have fabric.
The pattern we'll be using is size inclusive and there is also a unisex option.
Before making the pj pants, we'll also be making a simple patchwork tote bag to help practice various basic sewing skills.
Basic sewing supplies are available to use, but we do advise to bring your own kit if you have one so you don't have to wait to use the communal ones.
The workshop is fairly accessible, but if you have any special requirements as far as access or seating goes please do get in touch and we'll see what we can do.
You can book your place here or in person at the shop.
We only run these workshops if enough places are filled. If you change your mind or circumstances mean that you can no longer take part, please let us know as soon as possible. You can cancel your booking up to one week before the class is due to start, after that we will only refund you if we are able to fill your place.
