Patchwork & Quilting BUDGET Course 'Log Cabin Heart': Thursdays 2pm-4pm Starting 26th February

A six-week course of sewing lessons at Catkin & Scraps, Ulverston, beginning on the 26th of February and ending on the 2nd of April

Please note: This is a 'budget' course, which means that it will be taught while the shop is open and some interruptions will occur while your teacher serves the occasional customer. On the plus side, the course is priced accordingly (it's usually £120) and I have limited it to three places so that you will still receive a good amount of tuition.

Each week you will have a two-hour lesson in our Making Space, with full use of our Janome computerised sewing machines. Tea and coffee is available.

You'll be making a Heart Log Cabin Quilt, which is a fairly simple quilt that is suitable for quilting newbies, though it may be a bit much if you have never sewn before at all! 

I'll show you how to plan your quilt top, cut and organise your strips and construct your log cabin blocks. You'll be able to add borders and maybe some extra elements if you want the quilt to be a throw size. If you make just the heart it'll be 46" square, big enough for a baby quilt or display only. 

Once you've finished your top I'll explain how to make the quilt sandwich - which you will need to make at home as we don't have the floor space - and then we'll quilt it on the sewing machine and finish with a quilt binding.

There is quite a bit of work to do on this so you'll need to do some 'homework' in order to fiinish within the six weeks (if you do not have the equipment you need at home you can book onto our Saturday afternoon Sewcials to work on your quilt.) Alternatively you;ll be given the option to continue working on it in a following six-week course.

The cost of the fabrics you will need is not included in the course but they will be available here for you to buy. Students receive a 10% discount on fabrics in the shop while they are booked onto a course, but you do not have to buy with us if you prefer to shop elsewhere or already have fabric. 

If you want to use your own fabric you'll need approximately 1.5 metres of quilting cotton in your heart colours and 80cm of quilting cotton in your background colours, and there needs to be a good amount of contrast between the two.

How much fabric you'll need for borders, additional elements, binding, batting and backing depends on the size of your quilt top - we can work that out in the course.

Basic sewing supplies are available to use, but we do advise to bring your own kit if you have one so you don't have to wait to use the communal ones. 

The workshop is fairly accessible, but if you have any special requirements as far as access or seating goes please do get in touch and we'll see what we can do.
